Living with bears

“A fed bear is a dead bear”

  • Problems occur when bears have access to food sources or garbage and they start to associate people with food
  • Bears can smell food from over a mile away
  • The bears' need for food overwhelms their fear of humans

Why can't we simply relocate bears to areas where they don't collide with humans?
-> Because there are not enough large areas left due to habitat loss, fragmentation and urban sprawl!

What to do if a bear comes into the yard?
  1. Make sure you’re in a safe area
  2. the bear has a clear escape route
  3. scare the bear away
  4. make sure there’s nothing in the yard that could’ve attracted the bear in the first place

Further tips
  • Don’t leave garbage or pet food out
  • Clean grills
  • Pick ripe fruit and remove fallen fruit
  • Put up electric fencing
  • Secure commercial garbage in bear resistant dumpsters
