Problems occur when bears have access to food sources or garbage and they start to associate people with food
Bears can smell food from over a mile away
The bears' need for food overwhelms their fear of humans
Why can't we simply relocate bears to areas where they don't collide with humans?
-> Because there are not enough large areas left due to habitat loss, fragmentation and urban sprawl!
What to do if a bear comes into the yard?
Make sure you’re in a safe area
the bear has a clear escape route
scare the bear away
make sure there’s nothing in the yard that could’ve attracted the bear in the first place
Further tips
Don’t leave garbage or pet food out
Clean grills
Pick ripe fruit and remove fallen fruit
Put up electric fencing
Secure commercial garbage in bear resistant dumpsters
